Editing video – recommendations

I’m asking the collective intelligence of social media for recommendations for video editing sotware. I need to work with video, for classes, Kleztival, whatever. I’ve been improvising ad hoc solutions with special purpose freeware – iMovie for cutting, Aegisub and Jubler for subtitles, and who-knows-what for DVD ripping. But the workflow is getting a little messy.
I’m thinking that a single tool might give a better workflow and I’m asking for suggestions.

  • Final Cut Pro from Apple is $200 in the education bundle that comes with other things I’ll probably never use. I can get a free trial version, but it is worth even learning how to use it?
  • There’s an inexpensive program called VideoProc for Mac by Digiarty Software. Is it good and easy to use?
  • Are there better packages out there?
  • Or is it better to continue using shareware for each particular purpose?

It’s not that I enjoy videos – I started watching a video lesson about how to make video lessons and it was driving me crazy, I wish they had written something down. I don’t believe anyone actually learns better from a video than from an article or book. I don’t enjoy videos but it’s a bad idea whose time has come.
